New York City is faced with the threat of rising sea levels, escalating energy prices, increased air pollution, heat waves, combined sewer overflow, and intense flooding events. Green buildings are have become a mainstream solution to mitigating these threats. Green roofs in particular have been hailed as a solution to many problems, yet they are not perceived as the most economical approach to any one challenge. The panelists will address the science behind green roofs, the process of designing and constructing green roofs, regulatory and financial issues related to such construction, and governmental initiatives that could foster widespread green roof implementation, if proven economically viable on the whole. More info. RSVP to Christine Fazio.

ASHRAE Green Building Standard
In conjunction with the Mayor’s Office of Long Term Planning & Sustainability, USGBC NY recently convened a committee of more than 30 leading figures in green building to comment on the 2nd public draft of ASHRAE Standard 189.1P: Standard for the Design of High Performance Green Buildings.
Following the full committee meeting, USGBC NY moderated smaller breakout groups focused on each chapter within the standard, then collated all comments into a single package submitted to ASHRAE on April 7.
The draft standard included many provisions that did not adequately address issues encountered in NYC, and the committee’s work, much of it highly technical in content, will no doubt have a dramatic and positive impact on ASHRAE’s final product. More info, including a list of committee members and full text of comments.
